Brenda Flanagan was elected to co-ordinatingcommittee of European Ostomy Association in June 1990 and come 1992 she became president of European Ostomy Association and, ex-officio,
member of co-ordinating committee of International Ostomy Association.

During the 8th IOA Congress in Adelaide 1994 – Brenda was elected vice president of the International
Ostomy Association.

By 1997 of the 19th June – 9th Congress of International Ostomy Association held at Calgary, Canada. Brenda Flanagan, who was also IA’s international relations secretary, was now elected as IOA president.

During the IOA World Congress in Frankfurt of 2010, Brenda was honored with the Archie Vinitsky Award for her services. This was followed by another citattion n April 2012 she was awarded the BEM for her unstinting services in the voluntary sector for almost 40 years.

It is given to a person who has the most outstanding voluntary service at international and/or regional level in support of the activities of the IOA. The Award is presented every three years at a Conference of an IOA Full Member association.

Our goal is to provide information, education and health care to all ostomy patients and their families and to pursue excellence in developing and establishing the highest level of ostomy groups all over the world in three existing regions structured under the IOA Coordination Committee.The IOA is divided into three regions that provided help to ostomates. We work hand in hand with specialists, surgeons, wound and ostomy care nurses for the advancement of ostomy care and practice.
